United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has nominated seasoned Bangladeshi diplomat Rabab Fatima as his Special Representative for Afghanistan. Sources indicated on Thursday that her nomination has been submitted to the UN Security Council, which is slated to make a final decision on her appointment.
Should her role be confirmed, Fatima will succeed Roza Otunbayeva, whose term concluded in September last year, reports Ariana News.
Fatima has served as the UN Under-Secretary-General and High Representative for the Least Developed Countries, Landlocked Developing Countries and Small Island Developing States since 2022. A distinguished career diplomat, she has previously held the posts of Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN in New York and the nation’s ambassador to Japan.
Furthermore, she has occupied senior positions within the Commonwealth Secretariat and the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), where her work centred on human rights, migration and international development.
Official confirmation of the nomination from the United Nations is currently pending.
