Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has sent gifts to a security guard of an ATM booth who used to quietly greet his motorcade every day by standing with a sheaf of paddy beside a busy road in the capital.
Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon visited Abdus Salam, a security guard at an ATM booth in Ramna, on Wednesday morning and handed over the gifts on behalf of the prime minister.
During the visit, Rumon also enquired about Salam’s health and family.
Salam, a resident of Nagarbari Ghat area in Pabna, has been working as a security guard at a private bank’s ATM booth near the former Ramna Police Station for the past eight months.
He previously worked as a driver but was forced to leave the profession after suffering a stroke. Despite his health challenges, he continues to work a 12-hour shift every day, from 8am to 8pm.
For months, Salam has been standing outside the ATM booth holding a sheaf of paddy whenever the Prime Minister’s motorcade passes the road on his way to the Secretariat, as a gesture of respect and greeting.
The quiet act of respect did not go unnoticed. The Prime Minister noticed Salam’s regular gesture and later asked his press secretary to locate the security guard and deliver gifts to him.
Receiving the gifts, an emotional Salam said he never expected that the Prime Minister would notice him or remember his daily greeting.
“I admire the Prime Minister and his family. Whenever his motorcade passes this road, I salute him,” Salam said.
“Every day when the Prime Minister passes by, he smiles and greets me from inside his vehicle. His smile fills my heart with happiness. Today is the happiest day of my life. The Prime Minister has sent gifts to an ordinary person like me. I could not have asked for anything more,” he added.
