A court in Jamalpur on Monday sentenced seven men to death and acquitted one accused in a case over the gang rape of a housewife in Bakshiganj upazila.
Judge Abdur Rahim of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 delivered the verdict in the afternoon, also imposing a fine of Tk1 lakh on each of the convicts.
The convicted persons are Pappu, Biju, Badsha, Jewel, Ashraful, Jasim and Asmat. Idris Ali was acquitted in the case. All the accused are residents of different villages in Bakshiganj upazila.
According to the case details, the victim, a housewife from Chakpathak village in Sherpur, was returning home on 25 May 2025 when the incident took place.
Around midnight, she was travelling from Jhagrarchar Bazar to her rented house in Janakipur in an easy-bike driven by Idris Ali. During the journey, the accused allegedly intercepted the vehicle, forced her into a van and took her to an abandoned kitchen in Nilakshia Uttarpara, where she was gang-raped.
The next day, the victim filed a case at Bakshiganj police station against six named suspects and three to four unidentified persons.
Police completed their investigation after around eight months and submitted the charge sheet on 15 April this year.
The court delivered its verdict after recording testimony from seven of the nine witnesses in the case.
