Lionel Messi made World Cup history on Sunday after scoring in Argentina’s 3-1 win over Jordan.
The Argentina captain became the first player to score in seven straight World Cup matches. He moved past France great Just Fontaine and Brazil legend Jairzinho, who both scored in six consecutive games.
Messi came off the bench and scored in the 80th minute. He curled a superb free kick from about 25 metres into the net to seal Argentina’s victory.
His scoring run began at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He scored against Australia in the round of 16, then found the net against the Netherlands and Croatia. Messi also scored twice in the final against France as Argentina lifted the World Cup trophy.
He has continued that form at the 2026 World Cup. Messi scored a hat-trick against Algeria and added two goals against Austria before scoring against Jordan on Sunday.
The goal took his World Cup tally to 19. He extended his own record as the highest scorer in World Cup history.
Messi continues to rewrite the record books as Argentina head into the knockout stage with their captain in brilliant form.
