Turkey stunned the United States with a dramatic 3-2 win in their final FIFA World Cup 2026 Group D match on Friday.
The United States had already secured top spot in the group before kickoff. Despite the defeat, the Americans finished first in Group D with six points. They will face Bosnia and Herzegovina in the Round of 32 on July 1.
Australia also qualified directly for the Round of 32 from Group D. They finished second with four points after a goalless draw against Paraguay in the other group match.
Turkey, already out of the tournament, ended their campaign on a high. Kaan Ayhan scored the winning goal deep into stoppage time after Arda Guler started the move with a clever run. Can Uzun then squared the ball for Ayhan to finish from close range.
The United States took an early lead through Auston Trusty. Sebastian Berhalter also scored for Mauricio Pochettino’s side. Turkey fought back before finding the winner in the closing moments.
Christian Pulisic returned from a calf injury in the 58th minute after missing the previous match. He was involved in several attacks but could not prevent the late defeat.
