China has announced that Foreign Minister Wang Yi will travel to India next week to participate in the BRICS National Security Advisers (NSAs) and High Representatives meeting scheduled in New Delhi from 22 to 23 June.

In a statement posted on the social media platform X, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “At the invitation of India’s National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval, Wang Yi, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs, will attend the 16th Meeting of BRICS National Security Advisers and High Representatives on National Security to be held in India from June 22 to 23.”

The upcoming visit will mark Wang’s first trip to India in nearly a year. His last visit to New Delhi was in August of the previous year, when he held talks with Indian NSA Ajit Doval and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

He did not attend last month’s BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi, as US President Donald J Trump was on a visit to Beijing between 13 and 15 May.

Wang’s visit comes amid ongoing efforts by India and China to implement confidence-building measures aimed at stabilising bilateral relations. Ties between the two countries sharply deteriorated following the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes, after which high-level political engagement was significantly reduced, according to The Print.

A gradual thaw began in 2024, when Jaishankar and Wang met multiple times, followed by a disengagement agreement announced on 21 October 2024. This paved the way for renewed diplomatic engagement between New Delhi and Beijing.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also met Chinese President Xi Jinping on the sidelines of the BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024. During that meeting, both sides directed their respective governments to reactivate various bilateral mechanisms. Later, in December 2024, Ajit Doval visited Beijing for discussions with Wang in his capacity as Special Representative on the boundary issue.

Wang’s subsequent visit to India in August 2025 saw another round of Special Representative-level talks. Since then, both countries have taken steps such as resuming the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and restoring direct passenger flight services to facilitate people-to-people exchanges.

Modi and Xi also met again in Tianjin last year during the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Heads of State summit, marking their second meeting since 2024.

Further engagement is expected later this year when both leaders may attend the SCO Heads of State summit in Kyrgyzstan. During his upcoming visit to New Delhi, Wang is also expected to hold bilateral meetings with Ajit Doval and S Jaishankar.

India currently holds the BRICS chairmanship of the 11-member grouping, which includes Brazil, Russia, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates, Iran, Indonesia and Saudi Arabia.
