Police have arrested eight activists of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations after a case was filed under the Anti‑Terrorism Act over allegations of staging a flash procession in Rajbari.
The arrests were made Sunday night from different locations, said Uttam Kumar Ghosh, officer in charge of Rajbari Sadar Police Station.
The arrestees are Md Rabbani, 46, of Chhoto Nurpur village; Mainuddin Sheikh, 42, of Radhakantapur; Md Nasir Uddin, 42, of Bhobdia; Md Riad Mondal, 26, of Aladipur; Md Salam Milon, 57, of Bhandaria; Md Saiful Islam Sohag, 42, of Dakshin Bhabanipur and publicity secretary of Rajbari district Awami League; Nahid Mia, 24, of Rasulpur Khan Khanapur Union; and Md Nasir Sheikh, 64, of Dhuldi Joypur Shahid Ohabpur Union.
Police said that around 5:30am on Saturday, leaders and activists of the Awami League, whose activities are currently banned, along with the banned Chhatra League (BCL), Jubo League and its affiliates staged a flash procession on the Rajbari‑Faridpur highway in Gopinathadia village. They chanted various slogans during the procession.
Following the incident, Mostafizur Rahman, sub‑inspector of Sadar Police Station, filed a case under the Anti‑Terrorism Act of 2009, naming Sheikh Sohel Rana Tipu, joint general secretary of the Rajbari district unit of the Awami League, and nine others.
Another 30 to 35 unidentified people were also made accused.
OC Uttam said the detainees have been sent to court.
