The local administration has swung into action following a report published in TIMES of Bangladesh titled “AC, CCTV-equipped drug den found in Chatkhil Bede shanty.” Acting on the news, Chatkhil Police conducted a special operation on Sunday afternoon at a Bede colony situated on government-owned Khas land in Bhimpur village.
During the raid, it was discovered that the air conditioning unit had been removed prior to the arrival of the police. The officers seized one piece of shisha, equipment used for consuming yaba, an electric shock device, and a CCTV camera.
Investigations revealed that the CCTV camera had been strategically installed at the junction connecting to the main road to provide advance warning of police movements or anti-drug operations. Authorities confirmed that appropriate legal measures are being taken regarding these findings.
Abdul Monnaf, the officer-in-charge (OC) of Chatkhil Police Station, informed reporters after the operation that the police had raided the location multiple times in the past, resulting in drug seizures and the filing of cases.
He noted that recent action was specifically taken following an incident where police personnel were mistreated and attacked. Suspects in the drug cases have been arrested and sent to court.
“Our duty is to apprehend suspects and file cases; whether the honourable court grants bail is a matter for the judiciary,” the OC said. He emphasized that law enforcement and anti-drug operations would continue as they had in the past.
The OC further disclosed that while the drug trader, Bobita, has several drug-related cases against her and was recently detained, the police were previously unaware of the luxurious lifestyle she maintained inside the shanty house. Meanwhile, aggrieved residents have issued a strong demand to the police administration to bring the “godfathers” behind the drug syndicate to justice and to completely evict the illegal settlement.
