Australia stand in captain Josh Inglis believes the absence of Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head can help the team prepare for the future.
The visitors will be without two of their biggest stars for the ODI series in Bangladesh. Cricket Australia confirmed on Monday that neither Marsh nor Head will take part in the series.
Marsh is still recovering from the ankle injury that ruled him out of Australia’s recent tour of Pakistan. The Australian captain could return later for the T20I series if he regains full fitness.
Head will also miss the ODI series after receiving extra leave following the end of the Indian Premier League. Matthew Short and Oliver Peake will remain with the squad after featuring in Pakistan.
Speaking ahead of the series, Inglis admitted that losing two experienced players was a setback. But he said the situation could benefit younger cricketers.
“There is no doubt Mitch Marsh and Travis Head are big losses. They are both outstanding players. It is unfortunate that they are not here. But it also gives some younger players a chance to gain experience in these conditions,” Inglis said.
“We have a World Cup coming up. This gives us the opportunity to look at different combinations and a few new players. I think that is really important.”
Inglis will lead Australia in the ODI series, just as he did in Pakistan during Marsh’s absence.
The wicketkeeper batter has captained Australia in four ODIs so far. He said he is proud whenever he gets the chance to lead his country.
“I would not say that. To be honest, I have not thought about it. Right now they are not here, and when needed I am happy to step in and lead the team,” he said when asked about becoming a long term captain in the future.
“I am really proud to have led Australia in the last few series. It is something special for me.”
Australia have travelled with several young players in the squad. Inglis feels the tour will help them grow as international cricketers.
“I think it is great that we have some inexperienced players in the squad. It is great for them to come and play in different conditions. I am trying to learn from the experience as well and continue to grow as a cricketer,” he said.
