BRAC Bank’s Sepal and Chuadanga Reading Cafés hosted author Dipu Mahmud for discussions on his short story collection ‘Breakup’, bringing readers and literature enthusiasts together to explore themes, characters and storytelling techniques, the bank said. The sessions featured exchanges between Mahmud and participants, creating an interactive platform for literary engagement.
Mahmud, a development practitioner and one of Bangladesh’s most prolific contemporary authors, has published 132 books, including novels, short stories and children’s literature. He said listening to readers critique his work helps him understand how his writing is received and contributes to his growth as an author.
The collection, which examines relationships and love in contemporary Bengali society, also includes two stories set during Bangladesh’s Liberation War, adding historical depth. Participants praised Mahmud’s use of contemporary diction and relatable characters, particularly noting how he writes with Generation Z readers in mind, adopting their language and expressions to create authentic narratives.
Readers observed that the stories reflect emotional complexities of modern life, while also bridging generational gaps. Mahmud said that such discussions provide valuable insights into the strengths and limitations of his work and help him improve his craft.
