Miscreants broke into the temple at Pirojpur Municipal Crematorium early Monday, stole items, vandalised idols and set them on fire.
The crematorium committee President Sunil Chakraborty said the incident occurred between 3am and 3:30am. On reaching the site, he found the idol of Lord Shiva vandalised, dragged outside and burned. The main gate was also broken.
He added Tk2,000–3,000 was stolen from the donation box, along with cremation materials.
District Council Administrator Principal Alamgir Hossain, Additional Deputy Commissioner Mahmudur Rahman Mamun and Superintendent of Police Md Manzur Ahamed Siddique visited the scene.
Police have launched an investigation to identify those involved.
