Muzam Biswas, a 70-year-old farmer from Kanainagar village in Singair Upazila, Manikganj, who went missing after falling victim to the ‘Ogyan Party’ while returning home from selling cattle at Gabtoli livestock market in Dhaka, has finally been rescued.
Relatives found him receiving treatment at Nasir Uddin Memorial Hospital in the Jirani Bazar area of Ashulia.
On Friday at around 1am, family members brought him home. Following a consultation with doctors at the Singair Upazila Health Complex on Saturday morning, he is currently receiving treatment at home. Relatives have reported that he is still unable to speak normally and is struggling to recognise many people.
According to family sources, on the morning of 26 May, Muzam Biswas went to Gabtoli cattle market with his son-in-law, Suruj Ali, to sell a bull. After selling the animal for Tk90,000, he prudently sent the money home through another person for security reasons. Later, around 1am, the pair set off for home on a local bus.
It is alleged that members of the ‘Ogyan Party’ surreptitiously administered sedatives during the journey, rendering them unconscious. While Suruj Ali was found unconscious in the Gazipur area the next day, Muzam Biswas remained missing.
Relatives said the search intensified after reports of his disappearance appeared in the Times of Bangladesh and other media. When Nasir Uddin Memorial Hospital in Ashulia published his photo and identification details on social media, acquaintances recognised him and informed the family, who then went to the hospital to identify him.
It was later learned that a van driver found Muzam unconscious by the roadside in Ashulia and admitted him to the hospital. Although he regained consciousness on Friday afternoon, he remained incoherent and had an injury to his right leg, making it difficult to stand.
Muzam’s son, Moazzem, said emotionally, “After my father went missing, we filed a general diary (GD) at Singair Police Station. There was no joy of Eid in our family for several days. Having my father back is a greater joy than Eid itself. He is not yet fully recovered, but his treatment and care are ongoing as per doctors’ advice.”
Singair Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Mazharul Islam confirmed that the missing person had been found. He stated that the family would need to file a recovery GD to complete the necessary legal procedures.
