The Saudi Ministry of Health has urged Hajj pilgrims to carry and properly use umbrellas as part of preventive measures against heat‑related illnesses, reports Saudi Gazette.

Officials emphasised that umbrellas are an essential tool to reduce exposure to direct sunlight while moving among the holy sites.

The ministry explained that using an umbrella significantly lowers the risk of heat exhaustion, sunstroke, and dehydration. It also shields pilgrims from harmful ultraviolet rays and can reduce surrounding temperatures by up to 10 degrees Celsius.

Guidelines issued include attaching the umbrella to a wrist strap to prevent loss, storing it properly when not in use, and avoiding discarding it after completing rituals. The ministry stressed that adopting these behaviors will help protect pilgrims’ health and ensure safer participation in the pilgrimage.
