Md Hasibur Rashid, former vice‑chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR), has been sent to jail in the case over killing of student Abu Sayed.
The International Crimes Tribunal‑2 passed the order after Hasibur was produced before the court on Sunday.
On 9 April, the tribunal convicted Hasibur and sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment, Prosecutor Farooq Ahmed said.
Farooq added that the sentence began Sunday, noting, “Once he receives the certified copy of the verdict, he will be able to appeal.”
Hasibur was arrested on Saturday from a residence on Salimullah Road in Mohammadpur, Dhaka, following a tip‑off.
He was a key accused in the case, among 25 others who received varying prison terms on 9 April.
Abu Sayed, a BRUR student and coordinator of the anti‑discrimination student movement, was shot dead by police in Rangpur on 16 July 2024.
His image, arms outstretched in defiance as police opened fire, was broadcast live on television—a moment that shocked the global conscience.
