Police in Jamalpur’s Islampur have arrested four people in connection with the murder of auto-rickshaw driver Juel Sheikh and recovered the stolen vehicle.
Police said they have also made a breakthrough in the sensational case following the arrests.
According to the case statement, Juel Sheikh, an auto-rickshaw driver from Purba Shyampur village in Melandah upazila, left home early on 6 April with his vehicle to carry passengers. He went missing afterwards.
The next morning, police recovered his body from a maize field in West Shankarpur area of Islampur upazila. The body was wrapped in polythene and scotch tape. A murder case was later filed with Islampur Police Station over the incident.
A district police press release said that after the case was filed, police arrested Sujon, son of Badsha Sheikh of Kazirpara in Melandah. He was taken on remand for interrogation.
Based on information provided by Sujon during remand, police conducted an operation in Sherpur’s Jhenaigati area on 6 April and arrested three more suspects.
The arrested are Md Saidul Islam, son of the late Ismail Hossain of Bondhvatpara in Jhenaigati; Asmat Ali, son of Zainal Abedin of Goruchar Dudhnoi village; and Md Khurram, son of Haider Ali of Purba Bakakura village.
Police said they also recovered the victim’s stolen auto-rickshaw from Bakakura area of Jhenaigati based on information given by the accused.
