Water levels in seven rivers across the Haor region continue to flow above the danger mark despite a lack of significant rainfall in the country’s north-eastern region over the last 24 hours.
According to a warning issued by the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC) of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) on Friday, while water levels are receding in most areas, the pace remains slow.
The FFWC report indicates that at eight points across seven rivers in three districts, water is still flowing above the danger level.
In Sunamganj, the Naljur river at Jagannathpur point recorded a 1cm rise, flowing 52cm above danger mark.
The situation in Netrokona remains mixed. The Dhanu-Baulai river at Khaliajuri point saw a decrease of 3cm but remained 7cm above the danger level. Conversely, the Someshwari river at Kalmakanda point rose by 6cm to flow 36cm above the mark, and the Bhugai-Kangsha river at Jariajanjail point rose by 30cm, currently flowing 62cm above danger level.
The Mogra river at Netrokona and Atpara points decreased by 6cm and 3cm respectively, yet they remain 79cm and 10cm above their respective danger levels.
In Habiganj, there has been a more notable decrease in water levels. The Kalni river at Ajmiriganj point dropped by 16cm to flow 13cm above danger level.
The Sutang river at Sutang Railway Bridge point decreased by 20cm, though it continues to flow 35cm above danger mark.
A special bulletin from India noted that no significant rainfall was recorded in Cherrapunji, Meghalaya. As a result, the water levels in the rivers of Sunamganj Haor region are currently receding at a slow rate of 0 to 1cm per hour.
