A Dhaka court on Wednesday sent Sudip Chakraborty, an associate professor of Dhaka University, to jail following the completion of a three-day remand in connection with a case filed over the suicide of student Munira Mahzabin Mimo.

Metropolitan Magistrate Hasib Ullah Piyas passed the order after the investigation officer, Sub-Inspector Kazi Iqbal Hossain of Badda Police Station, produced the accused in court upon the expiry of his remand period.

State counsel Shamsuddoha Suman confirmed that the court denied a bail petition moved by the defence lawyers and ordered the accused to be sent to prison. Sudip Chakraborty, a faculty member of the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies, had been on remand since Sunday following an order by Metropolitan Magistrate Md Monjurul Islam.

Munira Mahzabin Mimo, a master’s student of the 2019-20 academic session in the same department, was reportedly found hanging from a ceiling fan at her family residence in Badda on a Sunday morning. She was rushed to a hospital, where attending doctors pronounced her dead.

Following the incident, the victim’s father, Mohammad Golam Mostafa, filed a case with Badda Police Station alleging abetment of suicide against the associate professor.

According to the case proceedings, a suicide note recovered from the scene reportedly named the associate professor alongside another student, identified as Honey.

Investigations suggest that the accused and the victim were involved in a relationship. It is alleged that Mimo was provoked into committing suicide following a video call with Sudip Chakraborty on that day.

The court’s decision to send the teacher to jail comes amidst ongoing investigations into the circumstances leading to the student’s death
