The High Court has granted bail to former railways minister Nurul Islam Sujan in three murder cases filed over incidents during the July uprising in Dhaka’s Jatrabari and in Panchagarh.
The High Court bench, comprising Justices KM Zahid Sarwar and Sheikh Abu Taher, passed the order on Tuesday, following bail petitions filed by the former minister in the three cases.
Advocate Md Motahar Hossain Saju argued for the bail, while Deputy Attorney General Syeda Sazia Sharmin and Assistant Attorney General Md Al Amin represented the state.
Advocate Saju said the High Court made the rule absolute and granted regular bail to Sujan in the three cases. He said there are no other cases against him. However, the state is expected to move the Appellate Division challenging the bail order.
Earlier, Sujan was detained by police from Shyamoli in the capital on the night of 16 September 2024 and shown arrested the next day in a case filed with Jatrabari Police Station.
The case was filed on 9 September that year by Kohinur Akter, mother of Imran Hossain, who was killed on the day the Sheikh Hasina government fell during the uprising.
Sujan was later shown arrested in another murder case filed with Jatrabari Police Station over the killing of Rafiqul Islam, who died on 18 September 2024. The case was filed on 28 August that year by Rafiqul’s wife Narjia Akter.
He was also shown arrested in the murder case of rickshaw driver Al Amin in Panchagarh on 5 August of the same year.
After failing to secure bail in the lower courts in these three cases, Sujan moved the High Court last year seeking bail.
The High Court issued rules on the bail petitions on 31 January last year in the Panchagarh case and on 1 September last year in the two Jatrabari cases.
Following hearings, the court granted him bail in three separate orders.
