Names of several top underworld figures have surfaced in the killing of most-wanted criminal Khandaker Nayeem Ahmed Titon, who had a Home Ministry bounty against his name.
Rival blame games point fingers at Titon’s own friend and brother‑in‑law Sanjidul Islam Emon, Enamul Hasan alias Pichchi Helal, and even former army chief Aziz Ahmed’s younger brother Tofayel Ahmed Joseph.
With multiple heavyweights dragged into the frame, the underworld is bracing for a volatile reshuffle of power equations.
Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police Joint Commissioner Mohammad Nasirul Islam told TIMES of Bangladesh that bail‑released top criminals are worsening law and order in the capital. He said surveillance is being intensified with technological support to bring them under the law.
According to case records, Titon’s brother Saeed Akter Ripon named Pichchi Helal as a suspect. Investigators also said family disputes between Titon and Emon, who allegedly moved to cancel Titon’s bail after his own release.
Joseph’s name has also emerged, linked to the 1999 killing of Saeed Ahmed Tipu, Titon’s brother.
Pichchi Helal, however, claimed Titon was his friend, accusing Emon of plotting the murder and trying to shift blame.
Titon was gunned down on Tuesday night at New Market’s Bottola. No arrests have yet been made.
On Wednesday, Ripon filed a murder case without naming specific accused, but listed suspects including Pichchi Helal, Badol alias Killer Badol, Shahjahan, and Roni alias Dagari Roni, citing disputes over lease of sacrificial cattle markets in Bhashila.
New Market Police Station’s Officer-in-charge Mohammad Ayub said Ripon’s case names eight to nine unidentified accused. Efforts are underway to arrest those involved.
