Whip of National Parliament Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu has urged political actors to move away from a culture of confrontation and violence, calling instead for the establishment of a democratic and tolerant political environment in the country.
He made the remarks on Tuesday while participating in the discussion on the motion of thanks for the President’s speech in the National Parliament. The session was chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed.
Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu said Bangladesh’s democratic journey has been shaped by long years of struggle and sacrifice, including a 17-year movement, involving the loss of lives and suffering of political activists. He paid tribute to those killed, missing, and injured in political movements over the years.
He stressed that lessons from the past must guide the future, adding that political culture should be built on respect for differing opinions, dialogue, and non-violence rather than confrontation.
The whip said Bangladesh’s political history since independence has been marked by repeated upheavals, but the current moment calls for moving beyond that legacy to ensure stability.
He further said that constructive engagement between the government and opposition could help the country address both political and economic challenges more effectively.
Highlighting the role of the media, Ruhul Quddus Talukder Dulu praised journalists for their contribution to sustaining democracy and called for ensuring their protection, fair wages, and full implementation of the wage board.
At the same time, he alleged that some media personnel had previously engaged in politically motivated misinformation and said accountability in the media sector is necessary.
He concluded that mutual respect and cooperation, rather than political hostility, are essential for strengthening democratic institutions in the country.
