A Dhaka court has sent Dhaka University teacher Sudip Chakraborty to jail in connection with the case filed over the death of student Munira Mahjabin Mimo.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ripon Hossain passed the order on Monday following a petition by Badda Police Station Sub‑inspector Kazi Iqbal Hossain.

Chakraborty, an associate professor in the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies, was not produced before the court.

He was kept in the CMM lock‑up in the morning. As no remand plea was submitted, he was not brought before the bench, prosecution SI Kamal Hossain said.

Defense counsel sought bail, arguing that Chakraborty was a respected teacher with no knowledge of the incident and was being harassed. State lawyers opposed the plea, saying custody was necessary until verification of his identity and address was complete.

The petition stated that Chakraborty had a video call with the victim on the night of 26 April and alleged that his instigation may have led her to take her own life. Investigators added they may seek remand later for further questioning.

On Sunday, police recovered the body of DU student Munira from a house in North Badda. Her father filed a case with Badda Police Station, and Chakraborty was arrested later that day from the capital’s Uday Mansion area.
