A master’s student at Dhaka University (DU) has reportedly committed suicide at her residence, leaving behind a note that mentions a teacher from her department and another student.
The deceased, identified as Munira Mahjabin Mimo, was a student of the Theatre and Performance Studies department for the 2019–20 academic session.
Following the incident, police have taken the concerned teacher and a student into custody for questioning.
A suicide note found in the student’s diary read: “Sudip Sir must be given Tk50,000. Honey and Sudip Sir, stay well. Return the gifts given by Sir”. The note refers to Sudip Chakroborthy, an associate professor in the same department, and a student named ‘Honey’.
Kazi Tamanna Haque Sigma, the chairperson of the Theatre and Performance Studies department, confirmed that the authorities went to the student’s residence in Badda after being informed of the incident around 8am on Sunday.
Speaking to the TIMES of Bangladesh, Sigma said information retrieved from the student’s mobile phone highlighted a connection with the teacher. She further noted that the teacher is currently in police custody for interrogation, alongside a close female friend of the deceased.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Jewel of Gulshan Zone (Badda) said the body has been recovered and sent to Dhaka Medical College morgue for an autopsy.
He added that the teacher was taken into custody based on evidence found during the primary investigation.
“If his involvement is established during the investigation, he will be formally shown arrested,” ADC Jewel said. A close friend of the student has also been detained for questioning.
The department chairperson expressed deep shock at the sudden death, stating that the matter is now under the supervision of law enforcement.
She demanded a fair investigation and justice regarding the tragedy.
