The International Crimes Tribunal‑1 has concluded hearings on framing charges against 28 accused in a crimes against humanity case over the killing of nine people in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur during the July uprising.
The tribunal set May 7 for delivering its order.
ICT Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim appeared for the prosecution, while lawyer Sifat Mahmud Shuvo represented the defence. Tamim outlined three charges in the case, detailing incidents of July 18–19, 2024.
He also referred to phone conversations between ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and then Dhaka South City mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, and said video evidence showed other accused present.
The prosecution sought an indictment order against all 28, while defence lawyers argued for discharge.
The accused include former textiles and jute minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak, then DSCC mayor Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh, former DMP commissioner Habibur Rahman, former additional DIG Proloy Kumar Joarder, former joint commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarkar, and leaders of the banned Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League.
On January 18, the tribunal took cognisance of the charges and issued arrest warrants for absconding accused.
According to the prosecution, Awami League, BCL and law enforcement agencies carried out atrocities during the July 18–19 mass uprising. Under the instigation and presence of the accused, indiscriminate firing was carried out on students and civilians, killing nine including Mahmudur Rahman Soikat and injuring many others.
The prosecution said there is sufficient evidence and 50 witnesses in support of the charges.
