Litton Das has made it clear that Bangladesh’s main target is the T20 World Cup as they get ready to face New Zealand. The captain said the team is thinking about the global event and planning with that in mind.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board has extended Litton’s time as T20I captain until the 2028 World Cup. The event will be held in Australia and New Zealand. Litton will lead the team with a long term goal.
Bangladesh will start a three match T20I series against New Zealand tomorrow. This will be their first series under Litton after the new deal. He spoke to the media before the series and shared his views on the team and their plans.
Litton said, “Our main target is the World Cup. We know it will not be in Asia. We will plan accordingly. Our bonding has been very good. We also had good preparation in the last World Cup (2026). We will try to carry that forward.”
He also spoke about a missed chance in the past. Bangladesh were set to play the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka under his captaincy. But they did not take part in the end. The issue started after Mustafizur Rahman was dropped from the Indian Premier League. After that, the board did not send the team to India. Bangladesh wanted to play their matches in Sri Lanka, but the International Cricket Council did not agree. Scotland later took their place in Group C.
Even after a strong ODI series, Mustafizur Rahman and Nahid Rana are not in the T20I squad. They have been rested for now.
Litton said, “It is quite simple for bowlers. We rotate them. You already know that two of them (Rana and Mustafiz) are not here. They are big assets for Bangladesh. I do not want them to play non stop cricket and get injured. We have many matches ahead in ODIs and Tests. That is why we made these changes. Since the World Cup is still far away, it is a good chance to give players more match time.”
