Bangladesh national cricket team have eased immediate concerns over World Cup qualification after climbing to ninth in the ICC ODI rankings, following three successive home series wins.
The upturn comes after a worrying dip earlier this year, when Bangladesh slipped to 10th ahead of the West Indies series, putting their chances of direct qualification for the 2027 World Cup at risk.
Under ICC regulations, the top eight nations in the ODI rankings by March next year will secure direct entry to the 2027 tournament. That arithmetic has weighed heavily on the Bangladesh camp. There is, however, a mitigating factor: with South Africa set to co-host the event and virtually certain to occupy one of those top-eight berths, a ninth-place finish could yet be sufficient for direct qualification. Teams outside that bracket face the qualifying route — a path Bangladesh are determined to avoid.
On the back of their recent victories, Bangladesh have climbed to ninth in the standings with 83 rating points. That tally is expected to rise further following their series triumph over second-ranked New Zealand, though a leap into the top eight remains unlikely in the near term. Crucially, they have opened up a meaningful buffer over tenth-placed West Indies, who sit on 77 points. That advantage could be eroded should Bangladesh’s form dip whilst West Indies improve, but for now the cushion remains comfortably in Bangladesh’s favour.
Despite the more encouraging picture in the rankings, captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz was keen to stress that standings alone do not tell the full story. “Direct qualification for the World Cup is important, but playing good cricket is equally vital. Without that, qualification will not happen either,” he said.
He also spoke with confidence about the team’s ability to push even higher. “If we can perform consistently, I believe we can go beyond just the top nine and move even higher.”
