Bangladesh’s air conditioner market has expanded rapidly from a niche luxury segment to a mass-market necessity, with Jamuna Electronics positioning itself as a strong domestic contender through technology, scale, and pricing to challenge global brands.
The market has grown from fewer than 50,000 units annually two decades ago to around 6.5 lakh units now, with a total value of over Tk5,000 crore.
The Growth accelerated after 2019, driven by rising incomes, urbanisation, extreme heatwaves, and the expansion of local manufacturing, which lowered prices and widened access.
Jamuna Electronics and Automobiles Ltd Director, Marketing Salim Ullah Salim told TIMES of Bangladesh in an interview that the company has established a strong presence in the AC market through continuous innovation and a focus on premium-quality products.
According to him the raw materials, technology, and innovations used in Jamuna AC production are unmatched in the domestic market.
Manufactured in a state-of-the-art facility using advanced machinery and high-grade materials, the ACs are fully capable of competing with global brands while offering competitive prices.
Energy efficiency is a key focus. Jamuna ACs use 5D and AI inverter technology to ensure optimal cooling performance while significantly reducing electricity consumption, he said, adding that the systems can save up to 70 per cent in energy use compared with conventional units. The ACs also feature an ultra-low standby power consumption mode of 0.5 watts.
Jamuna ACs also include a PM2.5 filter using high-pressure ionisation and nano cold catalyst electronic dust collecting technology to purify fine dust inside the house.
He added that Cold Plasma Technology ionises air, reduces mental fatigue, keeps the home infection-free, and increases body vitality.
Additional features include vitamin C filters to preserve skin moisture, silver ion and anti-germ filters to neutralise bacteria and odours, and UVC light with anti-virus filtration capable of up to 99 per cent air sterilization.
Jamuna ACs also include Gold Fin Technology to protect condenser coils from rust and corrosion in humid climates, leak detection and shut-off systems to prevent refrigerant loss and compressor damage, smart diagnostics and alerts to identify potential problems early, and a self-cleaning function to reduce dust build-up on the evaporator coil, he said.
The ACs offer eco and turbo modes for energy-efficient or rapid cooling, sleep mode for overnight comfort with reduced power use, I Feel mode to regulate temperature through in-room sensing, and 5D airflow to ensure even air distribution.
Some models also include hot and cold functions for year-round use, he added.
Seasonality remains a defining factor in demand, with around 80 to 85 per cent of annual AC sales taking place between late February and June, peaking in April, May, and June, he said.
Rising temperatures due to climate change, improving electricity management, and increasing purchasing power are driving AC adoption across both urban and rural areas, he said.
Jamuna is preparing by increasing production capacity, improving quality, and introducing new models to meet growing demand, he added.
