NCP Convener Nahid Islam on Sunday warned of launching a nationwide movement if the government fails to implement its pledged reforms, alleging a rollback of key recommendations and growing politicisation of state institutions.
He made the remarks at a discussion held at the Institution of Diploma Engineers in Kakrail, attended by families of those killed in the July uprising and participants of the movement. The programme focused on the implementation of the “July charter”.
Nahid accused the government of failing to implement recommendations made by various reform commissions and ordinances. He also alleged renewed politically influenced control over institutions such as the police and the judiciary.
“The government speaks of reforms and the July charter, but there is a clear gap between its words and actions,” he said.
The NCP leader said his party prefers resolving political issues through parliament, but warned that continued dysfunction would force them onto the streets.
“We want all decisions to be settled in parliament. But if parliament is rendered ineffective, we will have no alternative but to take to the streets,” he said, adding that preparations for such a movement are already underway.
He stressed that any future movement would aim for decisive success. “This time, we will not settle for partial outcomes-we will go all the way,” he added.
Nahid further alleged that the government is attempting to use the legacy of the July uprising and the sacrifices of the families of the deceased to legitimise its actions.
“We have never engaged in politics using the families of martyrs or movement participants, nor will we. But the current government and BNP are trying to exploit them,” he claimed.
Outlining the party’s demands, he called for restoration of democracy, protection of freedom of speech, reduction of inequality, safeguarding national sovereignty, economic reform, and accountability for corruption.
He also criticised the government’s overall direction, saying the country appears to be “moving backwards” since the current administration assumed office.
Nahid concluded by urging unity across political lines to uphold the spirit of the July uprising and ensure that the sacrifices of those killed are not in vain.
