On March 27, 2026, in Tokyo, a compelling, forward-looking vision for Bangladesh’s future was presented at the seminar on ‘Investment in the Future of Bangladesh,’ convened by the Embassy of Bangladesh in Japan. The Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus chose this forum not only to discuss issues of investment in financial terms but also to redefine the very meaning of investment in terms of knowledge, sustainability, and human potential. At the heart of this thought process and observation was the emergence of Grameen University as an entity in harmony with the needs of the 21st century. Unlike traditional universities, where the spread of knowledge is the sole goal, with no reference to society, Grameen University is conceptualised as a catalyst for bringing education, innovation, and society together in a constantly changing world. One of the most interesting and innovative aspects of the academic priorities of Grameen University is its focus on oceanic studies, with special emphasis on the Bay of Bengal, an area of immense ecological, economic, and geopolitical significance.
The Bay of Bengal is not only an imaginary boundary for Bangladesh; it is also an asset with tremendous, untapped potential for the country’s and the region’s development and growth. The Bay is full of marine life, fish, energy, and trade routes. The ocean is an opportunity frontier waiting to be understood. But, as Prof. Yunus said, the way forward is not to explore these resources the wrong way, but to do so in the right way by knowing them, caring for them, and having a long-term vision for their sustainability. Grameen University’s focus on ocean studies represents a paradigm shift in how education addresses natural resources. It is not just the study of the ocean from the point of view of science and technology, but it is the study of the ocean in association with environmental ethics, policy-making, and technological innovation. Students are encouraged to study how the ocean impacts people’s lives and how people can protect the ocean.
This is where the ocean is not just a subject of study, but a classroom without walls, where the boundaries between theory and practice are blurred, and the student learns by living the reality of the problems and finding solutions.
The core of the ‘Blue Economy’ is the concept of social business, a groundbreaking model developed by Nobel Laureate Muhammad Yunus. It is a new way of thinking that is very different from how traditional businesses operate. Traditional businesses are run to maximise profits, whereas social businesses are run to address societal and environmental problems in a financially sustainable way. If we extend this philosophy to ocean studies, we gain a new vision for the ‘blue economy.’ Rather than considering the ocean as a resource to be exploited for profit, we see it as a field for innovation where economic growth and environmental protection go hand in hand. We might develop sustainable fishing industries as a field for social business, where fishing provides a living for communities without harming the ocean. We might develop ocean-based renewable energy sources to meet our needs without harming the ocean. We might develop ocean conservation as a field with viable economic models, with communities as stakeholders in protecting the ocean. We might develop strategies for climate adaptation, especially for vulnerable communities, as a field with viable economic opportunities in which communities are involved as stakeholders. Grameen University’s integration of social business with ocean studies promises to create a new generation of graduates who are not only informed but inspired to be a force for good in the world.
Professor Yunus’s emphasis on a partnership with Japan points to the significance of international relationships in making this vision a reality. Japan is a world leader in marine science, coastal engineering, and sustainable development. They would be a logical partner for Bangladesh as we develop our capacities in ocean research and innovation. This partnership has the potential to transcend the symbolic level and achieve a high level of cooperation through mutual knowledge and benefits. For instance, a research partnership can lead to high levels of cooperation between Bangladeshi and Japanese researchers to address issues such as climate change, ocean pollution, and resource use. Student and faculty exchange programs can also help to build cross-cultural understanding and expose participants to new ideas and approaches.
Moreover, cooperation in areas such as marine robotics, coastal protection, and fisheries management can greatly help Bangladesh better manage its maritime resources. Such cooperation aligns with a higher vision of regional and global cooperation, in which countries unite not in competition but in cooperation and shared goals.
Grameen University is not only a vision for a Bangladeshi university, but it is a vision for a regional centre for knowledge, innovation, and cooperation. This will be accomplished by attracting students from the region and the world, thereby creating a dynamic learning environment that reflects the interconnected world in which we live. The countries in the Bay of Bengal region face many challenges, including climate change, environmental issues, economic inequality, and resource management. The emphasis on ocean studies at Grameen University provides a unique opportunity for such cooperation, bringing together students, researchers, and practitioners from various countries and facilitating the sharing of ideas and perspectives to solve the problem. In doing so, it sees itself not only as an academic institution but also as a facilitator of regional integration and innovation, leading to a more sustainable and collaborative future for all in the region.
At its heart, Grameen University’s vision is a radical departure from traditional notions of education. It refuses to see education as a one-way process of knowledge transmission and instead favours an interactive, experiential, and transformative model. In terms of its application in ocean studies, this means that students will directly interact with the environment they wish to learn more about. It also integrates multiple disciplines into learning processes, recognising that complex problems cannot be solved in isolated fields of learning. The vision outlined in Tokyo represents a major step forward in rethinking the future of education and development in Bangladesh. By focusing on ocean studies and integrating the principles of social business into its curriculum, Grameen University represents a vision that is both innovative and highly relevant to the world we live in today. In a world facing two major crises, environmental degradation and social inequality, this vision offers a hopeful way forward. It represents a vision of a future where development and sustainability go hand in hand, and where education plays a central role in this process.
