The opposition alliance walked out of the National Parliament session on Thursday evening, protesting the passage of what they termed “anti-people” bills.
The walkout occurred at 5:56pm, with opposition lawmakers exiting the chamber shortly before the session concluded.
Leader of the Opposition Shafiqur Rahman said, “It is unfortunate but true that despite the opposition’s logical objections, several anti-people bills were passed today. We do not wish to take responsibility for this. Therefore, we are walking out of parliament.”
The opposition had objections to various provisions of the following proposed laws: Local Government (Municipality) Amendment Bill, the District Council (Amendment) Bill 2026, the National Human Rights Commission (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, the Supreme Court Secretariat (Repeal) Bill, the Supreme Court Judges Appointment (Repeal) Bill, and the National Freedom Fighter Council (Amendment) Bill.
This follows protests staged by the 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami a week prior, demanding the implementation of the referendum verdict.
Earlier, on the 13th parliament’s inaugural day, opposition carried out another walkout in protest during President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s address.
During that session, members of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and the National Citizen Party shouted slogans and held placards describing the president as a “murderer” and “fascist Chuppu” before walking out before the speech ended.
