A Bangladeshi national, Md. Ali Hossain (49), was shot dead by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at the Lalmonirhat border early on Wednesday.
The incident occurred near pillar 874/5-S in the Dhabolguri border area of Patgram Upazila.
Ali Hossain, the son of the late Abdul Gofur from the village of Dhabolguri East Paniatari, was among a group of alleged smugglers who entered the Indian side of the border.
According to Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), the incident unfolded when a group of seven to eight Bangladeshi smugglers attempted to cut the barbed wire fence along the border. BSF personnel intervened, leading to a scuffle between the two sides.
During the altercation, the BSF opened fire, targeting the Bangladeshi smugglers. Ali Hossain was hit and succumbed to his injuries on the spot. BSF members retrieved his body and rushed him to an Indian hospital, where he was declared dead by the attending doctor. The body is now under BSF custody.
Syed Fazle Munim, Commander of BGB’s 61st Tista Battalion, confirmed that preparations for a flag meeting with the BSF are underway to address the incident.
