Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) Administrator Bir Muktijoddha Md Abdus Salam has emphasised the importance of a joint partnership between citizens and the City Corporation to create a waste-free Dhaka. Speaking at an event held on 30 March 2026, Abdus Salam shared his vision for a cleaner city at the ‘Roundtable and Youth-Policy Dialogue on Accelerating Zero Waste in Dhaka’, organised by the Environment and Social Development Organization (ESDO).
The event took place at DSCC’s Nagar Bhaban, with Abdus Salam serving as the chief guest. He outlined a ‘50-50’ partnership model between citizens and the City Corporation, asserting that if residents take responsibility for waste segregation and awareness, the City Corporation can manage the other half, ultimately ensuring a waste-free city.
Abdus Salam also revealed that DSCC has taken steps to establish the Dhaka Resource Circulation Park at the Matuil Landfill as part of the Prime Minister’s ‘Clean City, Green City’ initiative. The project aims to transform waste into resources while addressing the environmental impact of waste pollution.
The Administrator stressed the need for public awareness, calling for a shift towards waste segregation and recycling at the source, similar to practices in developed nations. He also called on social organisations such as ESDO to continue raising awareness and organising workshops to train waste collectors.
March 30, observed as International Zero Waste Day, is a joint initiative of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), with this year’s theme focusing on ‘Food Waste Prevention’.
Senior officials from DSCC and Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), along with students and policymakers, attended the event and engaged in discussions about the future of waste management in Dhaka.
