The first meeting of special committee, formed by the Jatiya Sangsad, was held on Tuesday at the Parliament Building Cabinet Room. The meeting involved detailed discussions on 40 out of the 133 ordinances issued during the tenure of the interim government.
Presided over by committee Chairman Zainul Abedin, the committee has decided to examine the necessity and justification of these ordinances and submit a report to the parliamentary session as soon as possible.
According to Parliament Secretariat sources, the ordinances are likely to be tabled in the House within a week, following further scrutiny. Next meeting of the special committee has been scheduled for Wednesday, 25 March, at 2pm.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Zainul Abedin stated that less than half of the ordinances could be reviewed on the first day.
He noted that while the interim government had issued 133 ordinances to meet the needs of that period, the special committee has now been tasked with determining their future.
“Some members have differing opinions on certain issues, which will be discussed in the next meeting,” the chairman said, adding that written opinions may be sought if necessary. He expressed confidence that the review of all 133 ordinances would be completed and presented to Parliament before 2 April.
The ordinances discussed during the session include the Anti-Terrorism (Amendment) Ordinance, Enforced Disappearance Prevention and Redress Ordinance, Police Commission Ordinance, and the July Mass Uprising (Protection and Liability) Ordinance.
Other significant legislations reviewed were the Anti-Corruption Commission (Amendment) Ordinance, Special Security Force (Amendment) Ordinance, Moheshkhali Integrated Development Authority (MIDA) Ordinance, 2025, and the Repeal of Father of the Nation Family Members’ Security Act, 2009.
The committee also examined ordinances related to the maximum age limit for direct recruitment in government, autonomous, and self-governed bodies, as well as amendments concerning the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA), Civil Service, Human Trafficking and Migrant Smuggling, and Wildlife (Conservation and Security).
Additionally, discussions covered the July Mass Uprising Memorial Museum Ordinance and amendments related to the National Sports Council, Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Youth Development, and various development authorities for Barisal, Mymensingh, and Rangpur.
The meeting was attended by committee members including Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, Chief Whip Md Nurul Islam, Law Minister Md Asaduzzaman, Dr Muhammad Osman Faruque, AM Mahbub Uddin, and State Minister for Public Administration Md Abdul Bari.
Other attendees included Muhammad Naushad Zamir, State Minister for Social Welfare Farzana Sharmin, Md Mujibur Rahman, Md Rafiqul Islam Khan, and GM Nazrul Islam.
Parliament Secretariat Secretary Kaniz Maula and Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Ministry Secretary Liaquat Ali Molla were also present. At the beginning of the meeting, a one-minute silence was observed, followed by a prayer for the departed souls of students and citizens killed in the July 2024 mass uprising.
