The nation will observe the Genocide Day on Wednesday, 25 March, with due solemnity and respect, marking the atrocities of 1971.
An inter-ministerial meeting has disclosed this information regarding the formulation and implementation of the national programme for observing 25 March Genocide Day 2026 and celebrating 26 March National and Independence Day 2026.
A series of programmes have been planned across the country to honour the victims and reflect on the nation’s struggle for independence.
Messages from the President and Prime Minister will be broadcast across print, electronic, and social media platforms.
All schools, colleges, madrasas, technical institutes, and other educational establishments will hold discussions and remembrance sessions on the genocide and the Liberation War, featuring prominent personalities and freedom fighters.
Starting from 12pm on Wednesday, rare documentary photographs on genocide will be exhibited in Dhaka and other city corporation areas across the country.
In the evening, special prayers and religious observances will be held nationwide in mosques and other places of worship to honour those who were killed.
A symbolic blackout will take place from 10:30 pm to 10:31 pm on 25 March 2026.
Key infrastructure and emergency services will be exempt, but no decorative lighting will be allowed anywhere during the night.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in coordination with the Liberation War Museum, will host a seminar at 10am or at a suitable time.
