British actor Rosamund Pike has reflected on one of the most difficult moments of her early career, revealing that the 2005 sci-fi film ‘Doom’ nearly derailed her path in the industry.

Speaking on the podcast ‘How To Fail With Elizabeth Day’, Pike described the experience of working on the big budget action film as deeply uncomfortable. The adaptation of the popular video game franchise featured an ensemble cast that included Dwayne Johnson and Karl Urban, and followed a team of marines sent on a mission to Mars where they encounter deadly creatures.

At the time, Pike was still establishing herself on screen. She had been filming the period drama Pride & Prejudice when the opportunity arose, and said the transition from costume drama to a high energy action production left her feeling out of place. Surrounded by action sequences, heavy weaponry and an atmosphere geared towards fans of the game, she realised the role demanded a physical presence she did not feel prepared for.

The film ultimately struggled both critically and commercially. Despite its substantial production budget, Doom failed to attract audiences and was widely criticised after release. Pike later reflected that the project could easily have damaged her prospects in Hollywood at such an early stage of her career.

In the years that followed, however, the actor gradually rebuilt momentum with a diverse range of roles. She appeared in films such as ‘An Education’, ‘Made in Dagenham’ and ‘Johnny English Reborn’, before gaining wider acclaim for her performance in the psychological thriller ‘Gone Girl’. Her portrayal of Amy Dunne earned her numerous awards nominations, including a nomination for Best Actress at the Academy Awards.

Pike has remained active across film and theatre. She recently appeared on stage at the Royal National Theatre and continues to work across multiple projects.

Her upcoming releases include the Netflix romantic comedy ‘Ladies First’ and the action thriller ‘In the Grey’, both scheduled for release in May, as well as the dark comedy ‘Wife & Dog’, which is expected to arrive later this year.
