The government has appointed administrators for five city corporations including Barishal and Rangpur. The Local Government Division issued a notification to this effect on Saturday.
According to the notification, Advocate Bilkis Akter Jahan Shirin has been appointed administrator of Barishal City Corporation; Md Mahfuzur Rahman for Rajshahi City Corporation; Md Rukonuzzaman Rokon for Mymensingh City Corporation; Mahfuz Un Nabi Chowdhury for Rangpur City Corporation; and Md Yusuf Molla Tipu for Cumilla City Corporation.
The appointed administrators will exercise the powers and responsibilities of the mayor under Section 25K(3) of the Local Government (City Corporation) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2024. They will also receive allowances as per regulations.
Among the new administrators, Yusuf Molla is General Secretary of the Cumilla Metropolitan BNP. He is also the founder of the humanitarian organisation Bibek, through which he has worked for public welfare.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, Bibek earned widespread praise for conducting the burial and funeral of more than 450 deceased individuals. The organisation has also provided educational support, disaster relief, and aid to the underprivileged. Tipu has previously faced persecution and imprisonment.
Following the announcement of his appointment, leaders of Cumilla’s Jubo Dal, Swechchasebak Dal, and Chhatra Dal distributed sweets at Cumilla Town Hall grounds, expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. On Saturday, Yusuf Molla and the other new administrators met with the PM.
Prominent figures in Cumilla’s political and social circles believe Tipu’s experience and community involvement will positively contribute to improving citizen services in the City Corporation.
Earlier, the government appointed administrators to six city corporations, including the two in Dhaka. On 22 February, the Local Government Division issued a notification announcing those appointments.
