The venue for the next Finalissima between Argentina national football team and Spain national football team is yet to be confirmed, but Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu Stadium has emerged as the leading candidate to host the match.
The fixture was initially scheduled to take place in Doha, Qatar, but the ongoing military tensions in the Middle East have forced organisers to reconsider the venue. The match, which pits the champions of South America against the winners of Europe, would see Argentina, the 2024 Copa América holders face Spain, the winners of UEFA Euro 2024.
The match had originally been planned for the Lusail Stadium, the venue that hosted several key matches during the 2022 FIFA World Cup. However, heightened geopolitical tensions involving Israel, the United States and Iran have disrupted sporting schedules across the region and forced football authorities to reconsider staging the match in Qatar.
As a result, governing bodies UEFA and CONMEBOL have been exploring alternative locations. Spanish reports suggest the Bernabéu, home of Real Madrid, is currently the preferred option.
However, the proposal has not yet been accepted by the Argentine Football Association. Officials within the AFA are reportedly reluctant to play the match in Spain, believing it would effectively give the Spanish side a home advantage.
Rafael Louzán, president of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, acknowledged that the match should ideally take place on neutral ground but admitted Europe now appears the most realistic location.
“This is a match that should be played in a neutral stadium,” Louzán said. “But if circumstances lead us elsewhere, most of the players are based in Europe, so it would make sense if the match is ultimately played here.”
Several alternative venues have also been discussed. Wembley Stadium was initially considered but ruled out because an international friendly between England and Uruguay has already been scheduled there. Meanwhile, the Hard Rock Stadium in the United States was unavailable due to the scheduling of the Miami Open.
Other possible options include Lisbon and London, though no final decision has yet been announced.
Pending official confirmation of the venue, the Finalissima is expected to be played on 27 March. Argentina will enter the match as defending champions after defeating Italy national football team 3–0 in the 2021 edition.
