A court has issued an order prohibiting national team cricketer and former member of Parliament Shakib Al Hasan from leaving the country despite the fact that he has not step foot on Bangladeshi soil since last year’s July uprising.
14 other individuals were also issued travel bans who, according to the ACC’s petition, are currently under investigation for embezzling significant amounts of money for investing in the stock market.
The individuals facing travel restrictions include Sub-Registrar of the Department of Cooperatives Md Abul Khair as well as Kazi Sadiya Hasan, Abul Kalam Madbor, Konika Afroz, Mohammad Bashar, Sajed Madbor, Alea Begum, Kazi Fuad Hasan, Kazi Farid Hasan, Shirin Akter, Javed A Matin, Md Zahed Kamal, Md Humayun Kabir, and Tanvir Nizam.
On Monday, the Dhaka Metropolitan Senior Special Sessions Judge Md Zakir Hossain Galib passed the order in response to an application filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). ACC Assistant Director (Public Relations) Md Tanjir Ahmed confirmed the development.
Earlier, ACC Assistant Director Sazzad Hossain had filed a petition seeking the travel ban against the accused. The application stated that the individuals face corruption allegations and are reportedly planning to leave the country, making the travel restrictions necessary for the ongoing investigation.
Shakib Al Hasan is currently residing in the US with his family, confirming in October of last year that it is unlikely that he will be returning home.
