Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union held a protest march and rally on campus on Friday night, condemning a recent wave of rape and violence across the country, including an incident in Narsingdi.
The programme began at around 10:30pm from Bottala Chottor and ended with a brief rally at the same venue after students marched through the main campus roads.
Protesters chanted slogans against rape and demanded the maximum punishment for perpetrators, questioning the effectiveness of the judicial process and seeking accountability from the administration and the government.
Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union Literature Secretary Zahidul Islam moderated the rally.
Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union Executive Member Mohammad Ali Chisty said cases had been filed in several previous incidents but the judicial process often stalled due to prolonged delays.
He alleged that many offenders evade justice due to the involvement of influential quarters.
“If the culture of impunity continues, social unrest will intensify,” he said.
Jahangirnagar University Central Students’ Union General Secretary Mazharul Islam referred to the rape and murder of a child in Narsingdi and demanded a swift and transparent investigation.
He urged the government to take effective steps to maintain law and order and ensure exemplary punishment for those responsible.
The programme ended with a call for speedy trials in all cases of rape and violence, neutral investigations and guaranteed security for victims.
