Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested a man and seized counterfeit foreign currencies during a raid in the Bayazid Bostami area of Chattogram early Thursday.
The arrest was made around 2:50am at a flat in Jahanara Building, Ahmedia Housing Society, in the Oxygen Pathanpara area under Bayezid Bostami Police Station.
The detainee was identified as Md Sohel Chowdhury, 40, a resident of Fatikchhari Upazila in Chattogram district.
According to RAB-7, acting on tip-off, members of a counterfeit currency syndicate had been storing fake currencies of different countries in the flat with the intention of selling them.
Based on information, a RAB team conducted a raid on a west-side flat on the third floor of the building.
During the operation, law enforcers detained Sohel Chowdhury and recovered counterfeit notes amounting to 74,500 Indian rupees, 100 UAE dirhams and fake US dollars equivalent to $1,700.
Assistant Superintendent of Police and Assistant Director (Media) of RAB-7, ARM Mozzafar Hossain, said the arrested individual and the seized counterfeit currencies have been handed over to Bayezid Bostami Police Station for further legal proceedings.
