MP-elected Barrister Rumeen Farhana has warned that indulging injustice or unruly behaviour in any single constituency could trigger countrywide anarchy
Rumeen made the remarks as chief guest at a discussion organised by the Ashuganj upazila administration on Saturday morning, marking Martyrs’ Day and International Mother Language Day.
Referring to recent internal tensions within the BNP, she issued a warning over an incident in which people were obstructed from paying respects at the Sarail Shaheed Minar in the early hours of 21 February.
“If the BNP considers these recent events as isolated and indulges such actions, it will not bode well for the party,” she said.
“If unruly behaviour of the kind witnessed recently is permitted in one seat, it will spread to others. The BNP has secured 209 seats. If this continues, it could lead to total lawlessness across Bangladesh,” she added.
Addressing the political climate, she said she has frequently faced “tagging” over her remarks regarding the Awami League, though such labels do not affect her.
Speaking on the significance of 21 February, she criticised the politicisation of national history.
“It is our misfortune that we politicise everything. Whichever government comes to power writes history in its own way. As a result, we find people portrayed either as gods or as devils, with no sign of the common man in between,” she said.
She described it as unfortunate and shameful for the nation that the true history of the Language Movement has never been correctly recorded by successive governments.
Identifying herself as the daughter of Oli Ahad, one of the key organisers of the Language Movement, she alleged that the authentic history of the movement is not reflected in educational textbooks.
Ashuganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer Rafe Mohammad Chhara presided over the meeting.
Among others, Ashuganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Shafiqul Alam, Upazila Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Md Shahjahan Bhuiyan, National Citizen Party (NCP) Ashuganj Upazila Chief Coordinator Aminul Islam Dalim, Government Haji Abdul Jalil High School Headmaster Md Humayun Kabir, Upazila Agriculture Officer Md Habibur Rahman and Md Nasir Munshi attended the discussion.
