The elected members of parliament from the National Citizen Party (NCP) will take oath both as MPs and as members of the Constitutional Reform Council.
NCP Joint Convener Monira Sharmin confirmed this to Times of Bangladesh.
Narayanganj-4 MP and NCP Joint Member Secretary Abdullah Al Amin said, “The people have given us the mandate to fulfill the aspirations of the July uprising, and that is why we are taking both oaths. BNP, being a power-centric party, has ignored the public verdict by taking only the oath for forming government.”
He further said, “Since BNP has disregarded the people’s verdict and the aspirations of July, we will not participate in today’s cabinet swearing-in ceremony.”
Earlier in the morning, BNP MPs took oath at 10:45am as the majority party, while Jamaat-e-Islami and independent MPs were sworn in at 12:20pm. However, BNP lawmakers did not take oath as members of the Constitutional Reform Council.
This situation created uncertainty over the oath-taking of Jamaat and NCP MPs. Later, under the leadership of Jamaat Ameer Shafiqur Rahman, leaders of the 11-party alliance held an emergency meeting. In that meeting, the alliance decided to take oath both as MPs and as members of the Constitutional Reform Council.
