Police have taken five people, including a teacher from Dhaka University (DU), into custody from House No 32 in Dhanmondi in the capital.
The detained teacher is Professor Abul Kashem Mohammad Jamal Uddin from the Department of Sociology at Dhaka University.
According to sources, they were detained while going to place flowers at that historic house at Road 32, associated with the memory of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The identities of the other detainees have not been confirmed.
Dhanmondi Thana police detained them from Dhanmondi 32 around 4:45pm on Sunday.
The house, once the residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, has been vandalised and set on fire on multiple occasions since the ouster of Awami League-led government on 5 August 2024. It now stands as a ruin.
Assistant Commissioner (AC) of Dhanmondi Zone, Shah Mostafa Tariquzzaman, said, “I cannot make any statement regarding this matter.” He also stated that no one has been detained; they have been safely moved away.
