A Dhaka court has once again deferred the submission of the further investigation report in the murder case of Inquilab Moncho spokesperson Sharif Osman Bin Hadi, setting 19 February as the new date.
Dhaka Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam fixed the date on Sunday after the investigating officer failed to submit the report.
The case had been scheduled for submission of the further investigation report on the day. However, Assistant Superintendent of Police Abdul Kadir Bhuiyan of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), the investigating officer, could not place any report before the court.
According to case details, Hadi ended his election campaign after Jumma prayers in Motijheel on 12 December. At around 2:20pm, while he was travelling to Sohrawardy Udyan, assailants on motorcycles opened fire on the auto-rickshaw carrying him near the Box Culvert Road area under Paltan Model Police Station in Dhaka and fled.
He was first taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition and later shifted to Evercare Hospital after surgery. He was flown to Singapore on 15 December for advanced treatment, where he died on 18 December.
The case was later converted into a murder case.
Earlier, on 6 January, Detective Branch police submitted a charge sheet against 17 people, including former Dhaka North City Corporation ward councillor and Jubo League leader Taizul Islam Chowdhury Bappi and Faisal Karim Masud.
Dissatisfied with the charge sheet, Inqilab Moncho Member Secretary Abdullah Al Jaber filed a no-confidence petition on 15 January.
After hearing, the court accepted the plea and ordered further investigation by the CID.
The charge sheet names Faisal Karim Masud, also known as Daud Khan or Rahul, as the prime accused, along with his family members and several associates.
Some of the accused were allegedly involved in helping suspects flee to India, while others were arrested in connection with the recovery of the weapon and ammunition used in the killing.
According to the charge sheet, an initial analysis of the accused persons’ political affiliations and Hadi’s political activities suggests that the killing was motivated by political retaliation.
Investigators also believe the attack was planned to disrupt the upcoming 13th parliamentary election and create fear among voters, with the prime accused and his associates allegedly infiltrating Hadi’s campaign before carrying out the attack.
