A polling agent of Jamaat-led alliance candidate Mamunul Haque Mamunul Haque, ameer of Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis, was expelled from a polling station in Basila for allegedly trying to influence voters to cast ballots for the “rickshaw” symbol.
The expelled agent has been identified as Zakir Haider.
Shawkat Hossain, presiding officer of the Basila (Old) Government Primary School polling centre in Dhaka-13, confirmed the incident to The TIMES of Bangladesh.
Witnesses and voters said the centre was designated for female voters, where male polling agents are generally not allowed.
However, Zakir Haider was present and was seen repeatedly moving across different areas of the centre. He was reportedly urging voters to vote for the rickshaw symbol, which represents Mamunul Haque.
Realising the situation, law enforcement officials detained him, after which the presiding officer followed proper procedure and expelled him from the polling centre.
