The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed that no sanctions or penalties have been imposed on the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) following Bangladesh’s withdrawal from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, reaffirming the country’s status as a valued Full Member of the global game.
In a joint statement, the ICC said it had concluded an open, constructive and congenial dialogue with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the BCB, covering the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 and the wider outlook for cricket in South Asia.
While acknowledging Bangladesh’s absence from the tournament as regrettable, the ICC stressed that the decision would have no long-term impact on cricket in the country. The governing body reiterated its continued commitment to Bangladesh, describing it as one of cricket’s most vibrant markets, with more than 200 million passionate followers of the sport.
No penalties, right to appeal retained
As part of the agreed understanding, it was confirmed that no financial, sporting or administrative penalties will be imposed on the BCB in relation to the current matter. The ICC underlined that its approach is guided by principles of neutrality, fairness and facilitative support rather than punishment.
The statement also confirmed that the BCB retains the right to approach the ICC’s Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC) should it choose to do so, in line with existing ICC regulations. The dialogue, the ICC said, does not alter or detract from its constitutional autonomy, governance framework or established decision-making processes.
Bangladesh to host ICC event before 2031 World Cup
The ICC further announced that Bangladesh will host an ICC event between 2028 and 2031, prior to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2031, subject to standard hosting procedures, timelines and operational requirements.
This decision reflects confidence in Bangladesh’s hosting capabilities and reinforces the ICC’s commitment to providing meaningful opportunities across its membership to support cricket development.
ICC Chief Executive Sanjog Gupta said Bangladesh remains a priority cricketing nation despite the short-term setback.
“Bangladesh’s absence from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is regrettable, but it does not alter the ICC’s enduring commitment to Bangladesh as a core cricketing nation,” Gupta said. “Our focus is on working closely with the BCB to ensure the sustainable growth of the game and to strengthen future opportunities for players and fans.”
