Bangladesh’s relations with India were not smooth and faced some setbacks during the tenure of the interim government, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain said on Thursday.
Speaking at a views-exchange meeting with journalists at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the afternoon, he said the interim administration had nevertheless prioritised maintaining a good working relationship with India from the outset.
He expressed optimism that the next elected government would be able to address the challenges and make the bilateral relationship smoother by finding workable solutions.
Responding to a question on Bangladesh’s extradition request for former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, the adviser said no feedback had yet been received.
He also said the interim government was not leaving any burdens for the next elected administration, but was instead moving forward on several issues to make matters easier.
As an example, he referred to a likely tariff deal with the United States.
The adviser added that some of the agreements currently being signed had been under negotiation for a long time.
Senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs were present at the meeting.
