Shipping Adviser M Sakhawat Hossain on Monday said the government would not take any decision concerning the country’s ports that undermines national interest.
He made the statement while exchanging views with journalists at the Ministry of Shipping in the afternoon.
The adviser said the authorities are reviewing the roles of those involved in the situation that has recently developed at Chattogram Port, noting that port operations have been hampered. He added that the Chittagong Port Authority is working to restore normal activities.
Emphasising the need to keep ports operational in the national interest, the adviser said disruptions have caused hardship for the public.
“The ministry supports any initiative that is beneficial for the port and the country,” he said, assuring that no decision harmful to national interest would be implemented by the interim government.
He described the circumstances leading to the current situation at the port as undesirable and unintended.
Ahead of Ramadan, the adviser alleged that some traders are attempting to manipulate prices by stockpiling goods on lighter vessels.
He said mobile courts are being conducted daily by the Department of Shipping and other relevant agencies to prevent such illegal activities.
Strict legal action will continue against those found guilty based on evidence, he added.
