BNP Standing Committee member and the party’s nominee for Cox’s Bazar-1 Salahuddin Ahmed has said that the women of this country cannot be on the side of those who disrespect women and do not want women’s leadership to be established.

He said these things as the chief guest at the prize-giving ceremony of the Maulvi Saeedul Haque Memorial Quiz Competition organised by Pekua Upazila Chhatra Dal at the Shahid Ziaur Rahman Coastal College ground in his electoral area, Pekua, on Monday.

He said, “The head of a political party has made derogatory remarks about women on social media, which has sparked a storm of protest across the country.”

He said, “Those who made these derogatory remarks want to confine women to their homes, do not want to let them go to workplaces, they are talking about reducing women’s working hours so that women do not get employment. However, the Liberation War and the student mass-uprising took place to build a state of equality, non-discrimination, and democratic justice in this country. But one party stands against it.

Salahuddin said, “We have nominated many women for direct votes in the national parliament election. Yet, that party has not nominated any women for the national parliamentary election. Their activities themselves show that they want to confine the women of this country to their homes. They do not want to give women progress, prosperity, and dignity.”

He said, “Half of our country’s population are women, and it is the same in almost every country in the world. No country or world can ever move forward by keeping this half of the population behind or in darkness.

He called for protesting against the disrespect of women through votes on February 12.

At the event, Pekua Upazila Chhatra Dal Convener Naeemur Rahman Hridoy, Member Secretary Abul Kashem Nuri, and leaders of the upazila Chhatra Dal gave speeches.

At this time, Salahuddin Ahmed handed over prizes to the scholarship recipients and quiz-winning students.
