Leaders and activists of BNP’s student wing, Jatiotabadi Chhatra Dal, held a protest rally on Sunday against an “objectionable” post from the X (formerly Twitter) account of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer Shafiqur Rahman.
The protest march began at noon in front of Madhur Canteen at Dhaka University.
The demonstrators paraded through several university streets and concluded with a brief gathering in front of Aparajeyo Bangla.
During the protest, the leaders and activists raised several slogans, including “Shafiq, do you know half the country’s strength is women,” “This hacker hacked, call her a whore, return the ID,” and “Shafiq, apologise, women are not prostitutes.”
Chhatra Dal central and Dhaka University committee leaders joined the demonstration. Among them were central president Rakibul Islam Rakib, general secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir, organisational secretary Amanullah Aman, and Dhaka University branch general secretary Nahiduzzaman Shipon.
Leaders and activists from various units of Chatra Dal also participated.
The protest reflects growing student anger over social media posts targeting women. The rally demanded accountability and respect for women’s dignity in public discourse.
Addressing a brief rally on Sunday, Chhatra Dal president Rakibul Islam Rakib said, “Our main demand in this protest is that the Jamaat Ameer must apologise to women openly. If he refuses, we will be compelled to escalate our programme further.”
He added, “If Jamaat-e-Islami gains even minimal political strength in Bangladesh, it will pose a threat not only to women but also to the country’s overall future.”
Chhatra Dal general secretary Nasir Uddin Nasir commented on the hacking claim, saying, “Some argue that his account was hacked. We want to make it clear — it was not the account, but his own thinking that has come to light. Through this statement, he has revealed his position himself.”
Referring to Jamaat Ameer’s electoral history, Nasir said, “He has previously contested three elections and secured a total of 41,000 votes. It is now evident that the people of his original constituency no longer accept him. This is why he is attempting to contest from Dhaka-15.”
