Two men lost their lives after being electrocuted by a rat trap while picking tomatoes in Shibpur, Satkhira, on Saturday.
The deceased were identified as Monirul Islam, 45, son of former chairman Rajab Ali of Tetultala village, and Abdur Rahim, 35, son of Nur Islam from Shialdanga village.
According to Shibpur Union Parishad Chairman Abul Kalam Azad, Monirul Islam had a field near his house. To protect the crops from rats and foxes, he had installed an electrified wire fence around the field. While Monirul was picking tomatoes, his foot accidentally became entangled in the wire.
Abdur Rahim, a neighbouring farm owner, was also electrocuted while attempting to rescue him. Both died on the spot.
Masudur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Satkhira Sadar Police Station, said police rushed to the scene after hearing reports of the deaths from locals. He added that a formal statement regarding the cause of death would be issued following a thorough investigation.
